Iowa State University along with Purina and Dow AgroSciences is offering a professional horseman’s field day on Monday, June 20 from 2-7pm. The event is to benefit the serious horse breeder looking to gain optimum nutrition for broodmares and growing horses. Registration begins at 2pm. Anyone can register and it is free. The 72nd Annual Block and Bridle Horse Show took place at the Jeff and Deb Hansen Agriculture Student Learning Center this past weekend. The show was for exhibitors to bring their horses and be evaluated by a judge. Some of the classifications were showmanship, halter, English performance and Western performance. Some of the breeds that were represented were American Quarter Horse, American Paint Horse, POA, Appaloosa, and Miniature with over 175 entries. In 2014, 14 foals owned by Iowa State University were born during the AnS 332 Equine course. The foals have grown up on campus and interacted with students as the primary model for learning in both AnS 317A (Behavior and Training of the Weanling) and most recently AnS 317B (Behavior and Training of The Yearling).
The weekend of October 17-18, 2015, brought about a culmination of effort and learning. Students enrolled in AnS 317B attended one or both of the All American Quarter Horse Congress Sale and/or the Iowa Thoroughbred Breeders and Owners Association Fall Sale. Read more about Horses Sold
New Equine Learning Center
The new Equine Learning Center (ELC) adds 23 stalls for housing horses to the existing barns on campus. The historic campus facility has 4 large stalls with runs, 13 box stalls, 15 tie stalls, 8 paddocks, 2 round pens, an outdoor arena, an equine treadmill and a heated breeding lab complete with 3 foaling stalls.
