According the International Dairy Foods Association, National Dairy Month started out as National Milk Month in 1937 as a way to promote drinking milk. It was initially created to stabilize the dairy demand when production was at a surplus, but has now developed into an annual tradition that celebrates the contributions the dairy industry has made to the world After the National Dairy Council stepped in to promote the cause, the name soon changed to "Dairy Month."
Iowa State University Department of animal science is actively involved in promoting June Dairy month by offering their annual June Dairy month celebration at the ISU dairy Farm on Friday from 6-11am. With around 1400 in attendance last year, Dr. Leo Timms is excited to have another successful event on the ISU Dairy Farm. " It's important to take note of those that help sponsor this event. Without their offerings of donuts, milk, yogurt and ice cream as well as the knowledge they provide to the it wouldn't be the event that it is. Also, it is exciting to see the look on childrens faces as they take the tour of the farm." Dr. Leo Timms helps to coordinate the event as well as students, faculty and staff on the dairy farm and within the department of animal science. Midwest Dairy, Western Iowa Dairy Alliance, HyVee, Swiss Valley, Iowa State Dairy Association, Land o lakes, Roberts Dairy Foods and The Dairy Foundation help sponsor the event.
